Tournaments

As well as league chess, we run a number of tournaments each year at standardplay, rapidplay and blitz time controls. All except one of these (the FIDE Congress) offer free entry to members of the club. So here they are, in order of appearanceā€¦

Internal rated rapidplay tournament

This is a regular tournament running throughout the season on Monday nights. It happens every week as long as there are players available to take part. Unlike our other tournaments, it runs alongside other club activities (league matches and coaching).

The time control is usually 15 minutes for the game + 10 seconds a move from the start. We normally manage to play three rounds in one evening. Entrants are paired on Swiss principles. The results are submitted for ECF over the board Rapid rating.

As of 29 April 2024, the event has run for 28 evenings over 87 rounds. A total of 60 players have taken part.

There are no prizes, but we do publish weekly tables showing the overall standings among other things. You can download the latest table by clicking on the link below.

Guildford FIDE Congress

The 1st Guildford FIDE Congress took place from Friday 31 March to Sunday 2 April 2023 at the University of Surrey. A total of 136 players took part in the three sections (Open, Major, Minor). The results were submitted for both ECF and FIDE over the board Standard rating.

The 2nd Guildford FIDE Congress will take place at the University of Surrey from Friday 12 April to Sunday 14 April 2024. Entries for the event are now open. See the separate FIDE Congress page.

Internal rated blitz tournament

Unlike the weekly rapidplay tournament, this is a one-off event. It was last held on 12 September 2022 and a total of 25 players took part. The event was a 9-round Swiss tournament with a time control of 5 minutes for the game and no increment. The results were submitted for ECF over the board Blitz rating. The link to the tournament website is below.

The next blitz tournament will take place on Monday 20 May 2024. Also likely to be 9 rounds, but with a time control of 3 minutes for the game + 2 seconds a move from the start. It will be open to non-members on payment of a small fee.

Guildford Summer Tournament

This long-running annual event takes place on Monday evenings in June and July. It is an 8-round Swiss tournament normally run in two sections, Open and Minor. The time control is 75 minutes for the game + 15 seconds a move in the Open, and 45 minutes for the game + 15 seconds a move in the Minor (unless both players agree to a longer time control). A total of 51 players took part in the 2023 event.

The 2024 event will take place over 8 rounds from Monday 3 June to Monday 22 July 2024. It will be open to non-members on payment of a small fee. Entries are now open. Closing date: 1 June 2024.
